Inclusive Schools Week

Fargo Public Schools encourages our schools and our community to celebrate Inclusive Schools Week next week, December 8-12, alongside districts across the nation. This year’s theme, “Children First: Building a Stronger Tomorrow,” is inspired by the Maasai greeting Casserian Engeri — “And how are the children?” — a reminder that the well-being of our students reflects the well-being of our entire community.

Virtual Learning

Fargo Public Schools (FPS) offers virtual learning for students living within the FPS District boundaries. FPS utilizes Imagine Edgenuity and the North Dakota Center for Distance Education (NDCDE) to provide curriculum to students who request a virtual learning option. Lessons are asynchronous, meaning students may access them at any time on their device. Scheduled support is also available via video conferencing.

  • Elementary students (k-5) are enrolled in Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Art, Technology, and Physical Education/Health.
  • Middle School students (6-8) are enrolled in Math, Science, Social Studies, English and elective courses.
  • High School students (9-12) are enrolled in three courses at one time and have nine weeks to complete them. Successfully completing six courses per semester keeps students on track for graduation.

Virtual Academy requires a full-semester commitment, a designated at-home learning coach, and careful planning and discussion for the family prior to enrolling. It is not a short-term absence solution, a vacation learning option, the sole responsibility of the student, or a learning option for families who do not have at-home supports in place to ensure the success of their student(s). Enrollment is based on deadlines, availability, and prior success in virtual learning.

Registration

Registration is open for the 2025-2026 school year for Virtual Academy. Please see our registration page for more information.

School Cancellation Process

FPS makes every effort to keep schools open each day. Our first choice will always be to remain open, but at times the weather conditions within the city merit closing. We have two school make-up days built into this year's calendar - Monday, April 6 and Friday, May 1. If weather causes the District to close, those days may turn into school days. If no school closures occur and the make-up days are not used, April 6 and May 1 will be no school days.

Board Planning Committee

In September, the school board approved a deficit budget. That means this school year’s expenses will exceed revenues. While this is not ideal, we have enough in reserves to absorb the deficit. The board is committed to a balanced budget next year. As such, the bulk of Planning Committee’s work this year has been spent discussing our budget. Read more about the planning committee's efforts to balance the budget.

Bus ID Scanning

As of Monday, all FPS students in kindergarten through grade 12 now scan their student ID card or key in their student ID number (lunch number) when boarding and exiting the bus. This update established a consistent, districtwide system that reflects our Stronger Together  theme - unifying procedures across grade levels and strengthening collaboration among schools, families, and transportation staff.

What Starts Early Sticks!

By age 15, students with a history of poor attendance in elementary school are more likely to struggle academically and socially. They tend to have lower math and literacy achievement, be enrolled in less rigorous coursework, and are more likely to exhibit behavior challenges and lower social skills. They also face a greater risk of engaging in risky behaviors such as substance use or skipping class.

Medicaid Claims

FPS will continue its participation in Medicaid Administrative Claiming - a program that helps us support students while also bringing important resources back into the District. Through this program, schools are reimbursed for certain activities that connect students to health services - such as special education supports, counseling, and other health-related needs.
